Professor of Medicine
Dr. Gao has a long-standing interest in evolution and genetic variation, pathogenesis as well as vaccine development of HIV/SIV. He oversees the genetic and biological characterization of newly generated virus stocks that are used as a standard panel for assay validation. His group determines the subtype and quasispecies nature of viruses from HIV-1 infected individuals and expanded stocks at the full-length genome level. They also determine the coreceptor usage of each expanded virus. In addition, they generate infectious molecular clones for select virus isolates for more in-depth characterization and comparison.
